Handyman Advice

Our greatest advice to any property owners is prevent water damage. Sometimes the simplest thing like caulking can save thousands of dollars in repair. Check your weather seal around windows and doors, and siding or paneling. Watch for elevation drainage issues around the perimeter of the house. If the water drains toward the house it could eventually get inside. Irrigation spray heads should be set so they don't soak the walls. Neglecting things like this can cost in serious damage.

Critters don't pay rent and can cost you more in damage than a tenant.  Make sure the opening to your crawl space and attic are secured from unwanted critters.

When planting trees close to the house consider what the roots will do in the future and will long heavy branches end up falling on the roof.   Planning and preventing unwanted trees from growing too close to your property can save you tens of thousands of dollars in damage.  A cute sapling grows natural from seed and you think  it would be cool to have a shade tree grow 10 feet from the house, but that tree could damage the foundation and fall on the roof years from now.

When getting ready to sell or buy a new house it's always a good idea too make a list of all the repairs needed to accomplish your goal. Always do this before hiring a home inspector so you can compare notes.
